EARLY MEDIEVAL ANGLO-SAXON GOLD DISC PENDANT WITH FILIGREE AND FOIL BACKED GARNET INLAY / SOLD

A perfect quality, elegant, Anglo-Saxon period gold disc-shaped pendant. The pendant is exceptionally ornate, with characteristic Early Medieval applied filigree and set with a dark red color waffle foil backed garnet in the middle of a Cross.

At the top of the pendant is a suspension loop applied with filigree. The back itself is plain but shows indentations from the decoration applied to the front of the pendant. The interlace patterns created by gold filigree and the polished garnets reflect the high quality of goods worn by individuals in life and later buried with them. The waffle pattern, stamped on extremely thin golden foil, seems almost impossibly intricate for a hand-made object. A particularly refined example of the type.
