EARLY MEDIEVAL BYZANTINE GOLD SOLIDUS MEDAILLON WITH GARNETS

Incredible gold medaillon pendant with Solidus of Justin II and red Cabochon garnets inlay. The medaillon is exceptionally ornate, with skillfully applied filigree.

Helmeted and cuirassed bust facing, holding shield and globus surmounted by crowning Victory.
Rev: VICTORIA AVGGG H / CONOB.
Constantinopolis seated facing on throne, head right, holding sceptre and globus cruciger.

This type of jewelry made from coins bearing the portraits of members of the imperial family was particularly fashionable from the 3rd to the 6th centuries AD. The emperor often gave such pieces to high-ranking dignitaries to commemorate important events during his reign.
