An ancient Roman bronze bust of god Mercury (Hermes) with the winged helmet (Petasos)
A fine Roman cast bronze bust of the god Mercury. He wears his distinctive winged helmet (Petasos), slightly turned to his right. Mercury, the god of commerce, poetry, and travelers, guided Roman souls to the underworld. This would have been a votive figure, perhaps made to be kept in a wealthy home and prayed to, deposited in a temple as an offering, or kept for ritual with other metallic objects by priests.
