Roman gold Intaglio ring with winged Nike, Goddess of Victory / Sold


An ancient Roman solid gold ring featuring an intaglio of winged Nike (Goddess of Victory)


Nike is pictured in the centre with wings and holding upraised a wreath of laurel leaves (Wreath of Victory). Nike was the personification of Victory, and many people wore her likeness on jewellery to ensure success. Such rings were particularly popular in the military, where Victory was praised for battle successes.
